The SPF Debate
The SPF Debate
So I have been doing my research on which is the best SPF out there for protection and that also works well with your daily routine and makeup without leaving a thick white layer. After trying and testing many I have come to a find my absolute favorite. This I will get onto but first I want to let you know some information that may just make you change the way you view the sun and possibly even save your life!
As I am sure many of you are aware, there is a dark side to the sun. UV radiation both from the sun and tanning beds is a known cause of cancer because of the DNA changes it can lead to.
The US environmental Protection agency estimates that sun causes 90% of all non-melanoma skin cancers and likes it to 65% of melanomas. It is therefore super important that along with other sun safety methods (wearing a hat, avoiding midday sun etc) that you wear an effective sunscreen to protect you skin. Recent changes to the FDA rules have suggested it is not enough to just wear SPF and have underlined the need for ‘broad spectrum SPF’. So…. what’s the difference?
UV is produced by the sun and even when cloudy 80% can penetrate the clouds and increase exposure. Sand can increase exposure by 20% and snow by 80% because of reflection, which is why everyone seems to come back burnt while skiing! UV is divided into two: UVA which makes up 95% (responsible for premature skin aging and cancer) and UVB (responsible for sunburn) which makes up 5%. SPF that is not broad spectrum only protects against UVB. Therefore, always make sure you are also protected against harmful UVA with a good ‘broad spectrum’ SPF’.
Make sure to always apply sunscreen liberally- at least a teaspoon for each limb, front and back of body. Half a teaspoon for the face, neck and ears. Most people don’t apply enough which means that you only have 50-80% of the protection stated.
So now to my personal favorite? Heliocare advanced gel SPF 50. This is a great broad spectrum SPF that applies like a dream to your face and neck, on top of any other products without any trouble and also works as a great base for makeup. In addition, it also smells absolutely lovely. As UV can even penetrate when cloudy I wear it every day, and always recommend that all my clients start to as well as I know they will love it!
